Most Common Reasons People Do Not Floss

Not Flossing Davis Dental Practice CA 95618-7760There are a lot of people out there who don't floss regularly. They often understand why flossing is so important. You've probably heard all of these reasons yourself during one of your visits with us.

Flossing helps remove small bits of food and other debris from the spaces between your teeth where toothbrush bristles just can't reach. But knowing that, why don't you floss? Why doesn't everyone floss like they should? Here are a few of the common reasons people give when asked about their poor flossing habits.

They Don't Understand Why Flossing Is Necessary

While you can rest assured we will tell you all about flossing, not everyone really understands why it's necessary or even how to floss. They don't take the time to learn and don't see the point, especially those who brush and use mouthwash. They see flossing as something redundant.

They Don't Have Time
We're all rushing around trying to do multiple things at once, so it's easy for something like flossing to fall through the cracks. But flossing doesn't take that long at all. Once you've got the proper technique down, it should take less than five minutes. Most people only need about three minutes to fully floss.

Flossing Causes Bleeding

If your gums are healthy, they shouldn't bleed when you floss or brush your teeth. If they do, it means that you're dealing with gum disease and actually need to brush and floss more often. It's also a good sign that you need to come see us as soon as you can so we can help get you back on the road to good oral health.

It's Difficult
Some people do actually have a hard time flossing. If you have bad arthritis in your hands or have lost some mobility due to a stroke or other injury, flossing can be very difficult. Fortunately, there are some one-handed flossing options available today. Many stores sell small floss picks that can be used by just about anyone.
