Let's face it, no one wants a cracked tooth. If you happen to notice a crack in your tooth, don't panic. All of us automatically think that we have to get a tooth capped, crowned or taken out and replaced.
In fact, there are some cracks that can be repaired without too much difficulty. Better still, we have info on how you can avoid cracking your tooth in the first place.
Types of Cracked Teeth and How to Avoid Them
You may have noticed fractures running down the length of your tooth. These are called craze lines. Craze lines are small fractures of the tooth enamel only, which means they could be called surface scratches. Usually, nothing needs to be done about craze lines, because they are not damaged. You can avoid craze lines by making sure you aren't grinding or clenching your teeth at night. Also, make sure you avoid trauma to your mouth.
A fractured cusp is more serious than craze lines. Fractured cusps, depending on the extent of the injury, will need to be restored, usually with a cap or a crown. The best way to prevent a fractured cusp is to avoid trauma to your mouth, which would include chewing ice. However, you should know that adults in midlife and seniors may have more of these than younger adults, because of the way cavities were filled in the past, especially in molars. Your molars may be weaker and more prone to fracture.
A cracked tooth can happen several different ways. First, if you clench or grind your teeth at night, over time cracks can develop. Second, proper care and brushing of your teeth, as well as checkups, ensures that any microscopic cracks can be addressed before they become major cracks. If you are lucky, and the crack is small, filling or bonding may be all the tooth needs.
